First edition of the considerably enlarged Dutch translation of Thomas Salmon's description of Persia, Arabia and Tartary (northern and central Asia). It was originally published as part of Salmon's Modern history or the present state of all nations, and here translated into Dutch and considerably enlarged by Matthias van Goch, with new illustrations and Isaac Tirion's detailed maps, which would later be published in his popular Hand-atlas.
The part on Arabia is divided into 8 chapters, treating its geography, primary cities, royalty, citizens, language and science, ceremonies, natural history and the history of the Islam. The related illustrations include a large map of Arabia (including Qatar, Oman and Bahrein), a view of the Kaaba in Mecca, an illustration of a coffee tree, an Aloe vera and a date palm, and an illustration of a branch of a coffee tree. All in very clear impressions.
With the owner's inscription of J.P.P. VandenHamme on the first flyleaf and a list of plates in the same hand on the second flyleaf. Some occasional foxing and a faint water stain in the first few leaves. Very good copy. Binding only slightly rubbed along the edges.
