This map depicts the Spanish silver fleet being captured by the Dutch under General P. P. Hayn. With an inset of the island of Cuba. Two portraits of General Hayn and Admiral Cornelius Long. With numbered key to 20 ships at bottom.

Merian was born in Basle, Switzerland, and was trained as a draughtsman, topographical engraver and publisher. He was the son-in-law of Theodore de Bry for whom he completed the later parts of ‘Grands’ and ‘Petits Voyages’ . His own works included amongst others ‘Theatrum Europaeum’ (1629-1718) and Topographia (1642, 1646 and later).

This map was included in a German edition of the ‘Grands Voyages’.
