A particularly decorative example of Dutch cartography boasting two intricate strapwork cartouches. Exotic animals and bellicose Indians populate the continent, while in Brazil a scene of cannibalism unfolds.

Linschoten was one of the prime movers of Dutch and British expansion. His travel writing not only promoted exploration but literally provided the explorer with sailing directions.
Thus this map of South America, which goes as far north as part of Florida, is extremely well-detailed along the coast. It was based on information he gathered while labouring under the patronage of the Catholic archbishop in Goa.
