The turbulent strait of Magellan winds between Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia (here, simply 'Part of America') to link the Atlantic and the Pacific. In1606, nearly a century after Ferdinand Magellan sailed through the strait, Jodocus Hondius inserted this map of it (with north at the foot) into the first of the Mercator-Hondius atlases.
Early illustrations of penguins decorate the title cartouche, whilst the feature names are literal translations into Dutch of the Spanish originals, although few of the names have survived.
