Description: Captain James Cook (1728-79), explorer, circumnavigator and hydrographer. Three voyages, 1768-71, 1772-75 and 1776-79. From 1778 on printed editions of ' Captain Cook's Travels' appeared in English, Italian, French and Dutch.A close copy of James Cook's first map of Hawaii. It shows Cook's tracks through the archipelago, including dates, topographical features of the islands and a large inset of Karakakooa Bay with the village of Kakooa. On his third voyage (1776- 1779) Cook caught the first sight of the Hawaiian islands on November 26, 1778 and left the archipelago on the 15th of March,1778, in the meantime he coasted most of the major islands and did a remarkably accurate job of mapping the islands for a first visit. He returned in February 1779, where he was killed in a skirmish on February 14th. I The great debate regarding this map is whether the work was done by Henry Roberts or William Bligh of Mutiny on the Bounty Fame. While the text of the Third Voyage credits Roberts, the British Hydrographical Office copy of the Official Account includes Bligh's manuscript notes claiming to have constructed the maps. From a Dutch edition of ‘Cook's voyages'.
