The author, P. de Leide, the publication to the board of directors of the Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland. The work portrays the history of the Dutch city of Leiden and is based on publications of Orlers and Van Leeuwen. This work is however an improvement compared to the two previous works. Rather than publishing it in Flemish, it was published in French. The 30 fold-out and 2 full-page etching are beautifully executed. Particularly interesting are the anatomical theatre at the Academy of Sciences, the Academies anatomical collection, and the siege of Leyden. The last portion of the volume is a catalogue of books, plates and maps found at the Academy and at other institutions in Leyden. Bound in original vellum boards with a red title label on the spine and the intials ‘Ph’. One of the fold-out etching has some minor damage to the surface.
