29 A History..University of Oxford / Virtual Book Fair 176

Description: Rudolph Ackermann. A History of the University of Oxford, its Colleges, Halls and Public Buildings. London: R. Ackermann, 1814. 2 large quarto volumes. Large paper copy. 81 hand - colored, aquatint plates. Half leather with marbled end papers. Tooley: 5. This is a particularly superior example of Ackermann's Oxford.

A marvelous copy of this classic study of Oxford University. Ackermann's two volume set includes copious text on the history of the university and its colleges, but its glory lies in the 81 superb aquatints. These include general views of the city, images of the colleges, and a series of portraits of the various dress of instructors and students at Oxford. Tooley states that "only one copy on large paper was printed for 20 on small paper." Tooley also writes, "Of the forty or fifty copies I have examined, not one has contained all the...plates in the first state. The British Museum copy has all but two in the first state, and the Victoria and Albert Museum copy has likewise all but two...." This copy has all but four in the first state and it fulfills all five points that Tooley requires for a "really choice" copy." $5,600
