This is an authentic antique map of the World by Alexandre Vuillemin. This is earlier folding map edition that came out of Paris, dated 1853.

This large and striking map of the world is based on the Mercator projection. The map appeared in “Atlas Illustre de Geographie Commerciale et Industrielle,” and is loaded with information, such as international shipping routes of the 1850s and descriptive text on numerous countries regarding their size, population, spoken language(s), resources, and primary exports. Recent discoveries within the Polar Regions are noted with dates and place names.

What stands out most about this map is its implementation of 17th century elements such as decorative vignettes within the map and along the lower border. Within the map, illustrations of sailing ship and whaling scenes accent the oceans while scenes depict reindeer sledding and Russians fighting polar bears fill in the uncharted areas of northern Siberia. The lower corners of the map feature illustrations of the various people of the world. Also shown flanking a diagram of the planet are pictorial charts listing the world’s highest mountains and longest rivers.

Condition: Map is in A condition with no signs of weakness or separation along the linen folds. Map also displays original outline hand coloring.
