Description: Captain James Cook (1728-79), explorer, circumnavigator and hydrographer. Three voyages, 1768-71, 1772-75 and 1776-79. From 1778 on printed editions of' Captain Cook's Travels' appeared in English, Italian, French and Dutch. Scene in Tahiti, in 1777, with two men and two women dancing before a hut, spectators on either side. Three drummers are in the background under the shelter of the hut, with a fourth person clapping the rhythm. The dancers appear to be standing on a large woven mat. Banana palms, breadfruit trees and coconut palms can be seen in the background. From a Dutch edition of ‘Cook’s Voyages’.
