Description: Jaques Nicolas Bellin (1702-720) was the most important French hydrographer of the 18th century. Sea-atlas 'Hydrographique Français' , 1756-65, atlas to accompany Prévost d' Exile's ' Histoire. des Voyages', 1738-75.A map of nowadays Mocambique. The area around the Zambesi river, rich in gold, was for centuries frequented by Arab traders from the Swahili coast. They established trading post at Sena on the Zambesi river and Solofa on the Solafa river, where they traded products of Asia as far as China for gold. Tome Lopes, who accompanied Vasco de Gama on his 1502 voyage to India, was the first to identify the Empire of Mutapa, or Monomotapa as the Portuguese called it, with the Biblical land of Ophir and King Solomon’s Mines. However, to the disappointment of the Portuguese, by that time the once rich mines did not yield much gold anymore. From the French edition of Prevost's ' Voyages'. Ref.: Norwich, Africa, map 307.
