Description
Copper engraving. uncloured.54 x 37 cms. The engraving represents some ruins in the outskirts of Alexandria. Cassas was a draughtman and painter that was travelling in the Levant from 1784-87 under the patronage of Choiseul Gouffier as french ambassador at Constantinople. Cassas compiled his book " Voyage de la Syrie, la Phoenicie et le Egypte " that is considered the finest book printed on the Middle East during the XVIII century. The book contains 180 plates and nowadays is of a great rarity .
