large folio(59 x45 cms).4 preliminary leaves including half title,title page and list of maps.20 numbered maps and profiles some double page and some included in 18 sheets.Original brown paper boards with red label on spine.The atlas has been carefully cleaned of foxing. A wide margined copy. The two large 4to text volumes are complete with XIX century half leather binding( decessioned copy from the Foreign Office Library).First french edition of this rare atlas considered one of the cornerstones of any collection on the American southwest.The atlas contains the first scientific description of the American Southwest and California. The monumental two sheet map of New Spain is the most important of the first half of XIX century of that part of the United States. Humboldt compiled the information for this map from official sources and accounts due to he gained access to those sources of the spanish crown during his stay at Mexico in 1803-1804. A landmark atlas of the most important account written on the American continent during the XIX century by the father of the modern geography. Ref: Streeter 1042,Phillips 2682.
