Willem Barentsz (1560-1597(, famous pilot, discoverer and cartographer. Author of 'Nieuwe Beschrhryvinghe ende caertboeck van de Midlantsche Zee', the first printed pilot-guide of the Mediterranean. It is considered the supplement of Waghenaer's 'Spieghel der Zeevaerdt' for the Mediterranean waters.This chart is important as the first printed sea-chart of the entrance of the Mediterranean with the coast of Andalusia and the opposite coast of Morocco.The engraving is by the hand of the accomplished Dutch engraver Judocus Hondius. With its embellishment with strapwork cartouches, compas-roses, ships and sea-monsters this sea-chart is a fine example of the art of engraving at the end of the sixteenth century.
