Description: Rare reading and writing exercise manuscript for Chinese children living in Europe

Chinese reading and writing exercises.

(No place, ca. 1850). Oblong small 8vo. Contemporary half calf, inside bound by a paper string. With numerous reading and writing exercise of the Chinese alphabet and Chines texts, mostly written on one side of the rice-paper leaves. (39) lvs.

Rare school reading and writing exercise manuscript for Chinese children living in Europe. The book is to be used from two sides. When opened at one side it presents reading and writing exercises for beginners, gradually increasing in complexity, with all the hand-writing on the right hand pages, most versos blank. And when the book is turned around and opened at the other side, the manuscript offers Chinese texts, also mainly on the right hand pages, but in a more refined and smaller Chinese writing hand. These are probably intended for more advanced reading and writing exercises, and in the beginning several large Chinese characters are written on the facing blanks, probably to explain the more difficult characters.
Some notes in pencil in the European alphabeth are found on the blanks as well, and the texts often have a Chinese title, written in pencil, also in European letters, at the top, reading: "Liu Ah Yune", or "Ah Aloisius". At one side the calligraphic Chinese manuscript counts 20 leaves, and at the other side 19 leaves. No indication of place or names is given.
