Title: [Antique map of the World] Orbis Terrarum Tabula Recens Emendat et in Lucem Edita.
Author: Visscher, N. / B. Stoopendaal.
PlaceAndYear: Amsterdam / Dordrecht, H. & J. Keur & M. Doornick,1686.
Description: Dutch so-called ' Staten' bibles, published between 1637 and c. 1760, contained 5 maps: The World, ' Paradise', The Perigrinations, The Promised Land Canaan, The Travels of St. Paul and a plan of Jerusalem.

This world map in two hemispheres is a reduced version of Nicolaas Visscher's beautiful world map of 1658 (Shirley, World, entry 406). The map is rare as it only appeared in the editions of 1682 and 1686 of the 'Staten' bible since it met criticism for its 'heathen' decorations - the rape of Persephone, Zeus in his eagle-drawn chariot, Poseidon and his entourage and Demeter receiving the fruits of the earth - 'which should not be in a bible'. The criticism was followed and in all following editions of the 'Staten' bible the world map was decorated with the more neutral allegorical representation of the four continents. A very decorative world map.
Dimensions: 35.5 x 45.5 cm, copper-engraving, attractive later colouring, very good condition.
Reference: Shirley, World, entry 513; Poortman, Dutch Bibles, p. 195, pl. 129.
PRICE REDUCED FROM EURO 2700.- TO EURO 1775.-. COSTS ARE EXTRA.
