Description: A very fine watercolour painting of the rigged ironclad H.M.S. "Sultan" at full sea. She was named after Sultan Azizieh of Turkey. Commissioned in 1871, in 1889 grounded and sunk in Comino Channel, Malta, Raised and temporarely repaired in Malta and sent to Portsmouth, modernized in 1893-96, 1906 dismantled and hulked, sold in 1947. After the watercolour a chromlithograph was made for the book 'Her Majesty’s Navy.' Ref.: O. Parkes, British Battleships. p.161-65.
