Extremely rare copy of a manual with rules and regulations for maintenance of the ships of the Royal Marine at Naples, the handling of the equipment, the composition, the punishments, how to salute with the canons, the division of booty, etc., published during an interesting time of Naples' turbulent history when the English and Franco-Spanish fleets dominated the Mediterranean.
A preface by Antonius Count of Thurn and Valsassina (1723-1806), Commander of the navy of Naples and Sicily, precedes extracts of the rules and regulations issued by the count of Thurn himself and Sir John Francis Edward Acton (1736-1811), Prime Minister of Naples under Ferdinand IV of Naples, King of the Two Sicilies, and friend of the English, especially of the famous ambassador Hamiltion at Naples and his wife Emma. The preface is dated Naples 15 April 1800, and is directed to the commanders of the Italian navy.
The manual was compiled as a sequel for the work titled Istruzioni diretti agl'inglesi tradotte per sovrano comando e corredate da annotazioni da Giannantonio de Torrebruna tenente colonnello al servizio di sua Maesta il Re dellle Sicilie, published at Naples at the Stamperia Reale in 1798, and contains chapters as: 'Estratto de'regolamenti da osservarsi per il servizio militare politico, ed economico della Real marina, e per il buon governo a bordo de'bastimenti ...' (by Giovanni Acton, dated Naples 1 August 1783; pp. 7-22), 'Istruzioni provvisionali pel dettaglio economico sopra i reali bastimenti' (by Acton, pp. 23-30), 'Doveri particolari per il servizio a bordo de'bastimenti di guerra ...' (by Acton, dated 1 August 1783, pp. 31-53), 'Onori da farsi a bordo de'bastimenti armati di S.M. Siciliana' (pp. 54-58), 'Istruzioni genarale pel corso de'Reali bastimenti' (by Acton, pp. 59-71), 'Bandi di pene stabilite', and 'Istruzioni riguardanti il saluto del canone ...' (by Count Thurn, pp. 72-78), and 'Regolamento per la ripartizione delle prede fatte da' Reali bastimenti' (by Acton, dated Naples, 25 October 1779; pp. 79-86).

Very fine copy.
