Kunstformen der Natur [Art Forms of Nature]

Bibliographisches Institut Leipzig & Wien 1899-1904

lithographs (L) and photolithographs (PL); page size 35 x 27 cm; exc. cond.

We are very pleased to offer these beautiful images of shells, jelly fish, plankton and other sea creature by Ernst Haeckel, a German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist. He discovered and classified many new species, introduced many new technical terms, like ?ecology? and ?stem cell? and was a staunch supporter and promoter of Darwin?s theories. Between 1899 and 1904, he produced ?Kunstformen?, consisting of 100 prints of various organisms and published in sets of ten; these images were based on his own sketches and watercolours. A second issue, only containing 30 of the prints, was published in 1924. The images were arranged symmetrically for maximum visual impact and influenced greatly early 20th century design and art.
