First edition. 4to.Vol I is from second edition published at the same time that the second but thereis no difference in text and plates. Inlcuding the rare supplement or vol VII published some years later. 6 frontispieces, 1 portrait and 829 engravings (11 folding) showing mostly the Caylus(1692-1765) own collection recollected during his travels in the Levant. This work was an important source of inspiration for neoclassical designers during the rest of the XVIII century. His interests were also the roman gold coins, megaliths and painting technics that were the subject of different works written by him. This copy has a fine full calf binding with edges gilt ans spine richly gilt in compartments. Vol VII rubbed at corners and upper and lower part of the spine.Some light scuffed on covers.Internally a very fine copy. Else a desirable copy of this much rare work difficult to find nowadays complete and with original binding. Ref: Brunet I, 1705 Blackmer 465
