First edition of a description of the history, languages and cultures of various ancient civilizations in the Middle East, written by the German-French physician Ferdinand Hoefer (1811-1878). The illustrations show pieces of art, inscriptions, views, architecture and some ground plans.
Ownership marks on the half-title and title-page. Binding rubbed, hinges partly cracked (ca. 7 cm from top). Waterstain in the gutter of the lower margin, a tear in the second plate, and some foxing throughout; still a good copy.
