Extraordinary collection of more than 500 rare official publications relating to Dutch maritime affairs in the French period. The collection includes several hundred regulations and proclamations, and dozens of more substantial pamphlets concerning fiscal matters, fraud, life on board ships, trade, war, etc. and nearly none of these are recorded in the traditional literature or found in relevant databases. It's not only of primary interest for Dutch history, but also for maritime history in general as it gives a fascinating insight into maritime legislation in all its aspects.
Nearly all were issued by the Dutch Department of Marine Affairs in all its incarnations in the French period, from the establishment of the Batavian Republic (1795-1806) to the end of the Kingdom of Holland (1806-1810). This hectic political landscape is reflected in the collection, with publications concerning the newly formed government and the peace treaty with France, the war against Great Britain, the coup d'état of the unitarian democrats and the coup of the moderates only 5 months later, and the newly formed kingdom under Lodewijk Napoleon Bonaparte, King of Holland. The archives of the Dutch Department of Marine Affairs from this period were largely destroyed by fire in 1844, making the present collection even more valuable.
Some notable items of interest are: instructions for Dutch shipbuilders Instructie voor de constructeurs, scheepstimmerbaazen, … welke directie over de scheepsbouw aan 's Lands werven uitoefenen (The Hague, 1795); a proclamation renewing the VOC's charter until 31 December 1798 (26 November 1795); instructions for the barber surgeon and the friars of the Navy hospital, Enkhuizen Instructie voor den hospitaal-chirurgyn en fraters van het hospitaal der marine et Enkhuizen (The Hague, 1796); a pamphlet on the distribution of prize money Placaat en reglement op de verdeeling der buit-gelden (The Hague, 1796); regulations for the payment of port dues in the Nieuwe Diep and Den Helder Reglement en ordonnantie op het havenen en betalen van havengeld (The Hague, 1797); a list of the ranks of naval officers Rangschikking van het corps zee-officieren (The Hague, 1799); extensive regulations for signalling Telegraphise kust zeinen (ca. 1800); the official regulations concerning meals and beverages on board … reglement op de schafting aan boord (Amsterdam, 1809); instructions for the councils of administration aboard the warships concerning clothing, packing, nutritional goods in stock etc. with examples of the forms Instructie voor de raden van administratie aan boord der schepen en vaartuigen van oorlog (Amsterdam, 1809); and a subsection of 99 regulations issued together in 1801 containing a provisional list of regulations, proclamations and pamphlets, from 1665 to 1801, to be used as official legislation on all ships during the war, which is proceeded by the complete list of documents included with the title Lyst van stukken getrokken uit de recueils en resolutie boeken … welke gedurende den tegenwoordigen oorlog, … als een provisioneel recueil van zee-ordres aan … 's lands schepen … zullen worden medegegeven.

All documents are very well preserved, with only a few occasional spots and some browning. Most are untrimmed, with deckles intact. An extraordinary collection of rare official documents relating to Dutch maritime affairs in the French period.
