Map of Korea Prepared by Angus Hamilton F.R.G.S. 1904. London: Edward Stanford, 1904. Colour lithographic map. Dissected and laid on linen, as issued, total 730 x 560mm, folded into publisher's covers.
A map of Korea with hatchuring to show relief and an inset map showing the surrounding countries. The map was published on the 1st February, 1904, a week before Japan attacked the Russian Far East Fleet at Port Arthur, sparking the Russio-Japanese War. Part of the motivation for the war was rivalry over influence in Korea; as soon as the Japanese had the Russians contained in Port Arthur they invaded Korea, occupying Saigon and turning the country into a Japanese protectorate.
