Description: 1592 Gracia, Sophiani. Abraham Ortelius

Date: 1592 (Published) Antwerp

Dimensions: 13.75 x 19.5 inches (35 cm x 50 cm)

This stunning Ortelius map with original coloring was published four hundred and twenty-five years ago in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Based on a 1545 woodcut map by Mikolaus Sophianos, it provides a wealth of information and is an interesting and beautifully rendered starting point for understanding the development of cities and countries, political entities as they were at that time, and to compare that with what has ensued in the area since that time.

The map depicts ancient Greece, here called Macedonia, western Turkey, and the Greek Islands. Geographical features are beautifully delineated by Ortelius’ skilled hand. The map shows the location of all major cities and of small settlements as well. Mountain ranges, rivers and ancient political divisions are marked. Names of ancient kingdoms and peoples are included such as Bithinia, Galatiae, Ponus, Phrygia, Pamphiliae, all in modern-day Turkey. On the European side of the Bosphorus and Aegean we see Greece called Macedonia, and Thrace which became modern-day Bulgaria. Daciae, with the Carpathians clearly represented corresponds to modern-day Romania, Moldova, and smaller parts of Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Ukraine.

The map is beautifully presented and embellished with an architectural title cartouche flanked by two mythological figures, and a strapwork scale of miles in Latin, German, French and Italian standards. There is Latin text on one half of the verso. This is a marvelous work by Ortelius and merits a place of honor in the collection of anyone interested in maps of this part of the world.

Condition: This map is in A condition. It is a sharp impression with full original color on watermarked paper. A small stain in the Adriatic is not distracting. There some soiling in the margins.
