13 Sonnet 2 - Elizabeth Barrett Browning209

Title: Sonnet 2 - Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Description: Sepia lithograph with recent hand colouring; overall 27 x 19 cm. some foxing, o/w vg cond.

Very elaborately decorated print designed by Nestore Leoni, printed in Italy and published in London by T.Fisher Unwin Ltd, London, 1909, in a limited edition of 500. With its opulent scroll work, decorated initials and small vignettes, each print resembles a page out of a livre d'heure.

This poem stems from 'Sonnets from the Portuguese' by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, some of the most beautiful and intimate love sonnets in the English language. They were written in secret for her suitor, Robert Browning, and given to him after their marriage, September 12th, 1846. She reluctantly agreed to publish them in in 1850, at his insistence, as he considered them 'the best of all sonnets except only Shakespeare's'. - A serious illness at the age of 15 which left her a virtual invalid, did not prevent her from pursuing a brilliant literary career, independent of her husband's. She died and was buried in Florence, Italy, on June 29th, 1861.
