Title: Christ and his disciples on the way to Emmaus
Author: Vito, Don Monaco Vallombrosano (fl. 1574-1578), after Bruegel, Pieter I (1526/30-1569)
Description: From the Worship of Luke (24:13-27) Christ appears to his disciples leading them to Emmaus. Mirrored version in respect to that engraved by Philips Galle in 1571 in two states (New Hollstein 6). Text underneath has been cut out. From Piero Zani (1822) we aknowledge the whole inscription which reads: "P. Breughel inuentor. Dominus Vitus ordinis Vallisumbrosae Monacus excude. Romae ann.[D. 1576. / Christus peregrini dignaris sumere formam / Ut firma solides pectora nostra fide.]". The Monk Vito is known for having turned into prints some maps of the Tuscan region between 1574 and 1578. In the present print he added the sun and the moon on the top left.
