Description: The First Ottoman-Printed World Map
Based on Western Sources
And a Beautiful Example of Early Ottoman Printing
World.
RAIF EFENDI, Mahmoud / FADEN, W.
[Üsküdar, 1803]
World Map; Title in Old Turkish.

22 ¾ x 34 3/8 inches. Original outline and wash color; reinforced at a few folds, a few light stains, else excellent condition.

Very rare. This dramatic, Mercator Projection world map appeared in the Jedid Atlas Tercümesi, the first Turkish printed atlas; it was the largest single map in this work. It is notable as a superb example of the printing of Ottoman Turkish script. Only 50 copies of the atlas were printed, of which likely fewer than half have survived. It was published with the approval of Sultan Selim III and was a prestige project for the Ottoman Palace, a demonstration of its worldliness and openness to current knowledge. It was based on Faden’s General Atlas, and this world map was after “A General Chart Exhibiting the Discoveries made by Capn. James Cook…” by Lt. Roberts, one of Cook’s officers. Australia is near the center of the map, and the tracks of all three of Cook’s voyages are set out on it. All place names and information on the map are in Ottoman Turkish.

Raif Effendi had been attached to the Ottoman Embassy in London, where he no doubt came in contact with Faden's atlas. It was printed in Üsküdar on the Asian shore of Istanbul at the Engineer’s School Printing Press, which was in operation between 1776 and 1826.
