Description: Fine hand-coloured engraving of a beautiful Vase by one of the finest stonemasons ever, Giovanni Battista Piranesi.
Original copperplate-engraving by draughtsman, etcher and line engraver of architectural antiquities, John Carter (1748-1817), for “A collection of Antique Vases, Altars, Paterea, Tripods, Candelabra and Sarcophagi, from various Museums and Collections”published in London circa 1811-14 by Henry Moses. Moses "selected from various Museums, Collections, and Cabinets,.. the most esteemed monuments of ancient times, as would tend to improve the judgment, and refine the taste of the Student.." (of antiquities).
Of all antiquities Vases have provided the most admiration because of their variety, elegance of form, unusual designs, and beauty of the compositions that adorn them. To this is added the interesting information about customs and beliefs in the period represented by those compositions.
